Bangkok: Recently the situation in the world seems like a war where just a few days ago there was tension between India and Pakistan, whereas war between Russia and Ukraine is still going on till the war between Israel and Iran stopped. India’s neighboring countries are Thailand and Cambodia. The armies of both the countries are clashing on the border of Thailand and Cambodia. Since few days there has been a clash between the soldiers of both the countries on the border. Thai Army and Cambodian Defense Ministry have said that this clash happened on the border near Prasat Ta Muen Thom.
Prasat Ta Muen Thom is located in Thailand’s northeastern Surin province which is claimed by Cambodia but Thailand does not accept this claim. As such, this area has become a subject of dispute between the two countries. This is the situation of dispute between both the countries. Recently, there was a clash between two army units in which two soldiers were injured, due to which tension has increased between the two countries. This clash happened after Thailand expelled the Cambodian ambassador following a landmine blast.
Both countries recalled their ambassadors
The Thai army chief said that they first opened fire when they saw drones flying in the sky, which further worsened the situation between the two countries, after which each other’s diplomats were called back. The dispute between the two reached a situation when a Cambodian soldier was killed in firing in the disputed area, which further increased the tension. All important trade routes have been closed and a tense situation has arisen.
blame each other
Both countries are blaming each other. The Thai army had claimed that Cambodian forces opened fire after deploying a surveillance drone near the disputed Moan Thom temple and sending heavily armed troops to the area. On the other hand, Cambodia’s Defense Ministry has accused Thai troops of intrusion.
What is Cambodia saying about the fighting?
Cambodia rejected Thailand’s allegations and said that Thai soldiers opened fire first and their army retaliated to it to kill itself. Cambodia’s Defense Ministry spokesperson Mali Socheata said, ‘The Thai army intruded into our border and violated our sovereignty, after which our soldiers were forced to retaliate.

There is no solution to this dispute yet, but its consequences are proving to be very dangerous. Recently, five Thai soldiers were injured in a landmine explosion, after which Thailand expelled Cambodia’s ambassador and recalled its envoy from Phnom Penh. In response, Cambodia also recalled its diplomats and announced to take relations with Thailand to a ‘low level’. Meanwhile, Thailand’s border dispute situation has created turmoil in its political party. Earlier, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has been temporarily suspended by the court over this dispute. The court is investigating the allegations of moral negligence against him and he has been asked to present his side by July 31. He had a phone conversation with Cambodia’s former leader Hun Sen to resolve border dispute, but that call got leaked and massive protests started in the country in which he called him uncle.
What will be its effect regionally and internationally?
The situation is already going on in Myanmar, and in the meantime, the entire South East Asia will be caught in the lap of the dispute between these two countries. On the other hand, India’s maritime border falls between these two countries, so these are India’s neighboring countries, India has kept an eye on them. Thailand is considered a good country for Indian tourists, where it is a good country to travel at a low cost, and in 2024, 21 lakh Indian tourists visited Thailand. In the meantime, due to this tension, its effect will be seen on the tourists of Thailand.
As far as Cambodia is concerned, this decision has been taken on an international platform. Thailand had proposed negotiations through the Joint Border Committee (JBC), citing the 2000 agreement, but Cambodia rejected it.
