What is Cinema, Really?

Published:

This is the place where we move away from our reality and feel someone else’s reality. This is a dream that is seen with open eyes.

• Cinema is not just a story shown on the screen, it is like a magic that reaches our heart and mind through our eyes, and we can feel it.

• When we watch a movie, it is a new world, but there too there is pain, tears, trouble, love, and fear like the real world. But all this is happening behind the curtain.

• Cinema is a place where time stops and we come out of our troubles for some time.

Cinema as collective thought and imagination

When a person dreams, it is an imagination. But when millions of people see that dream together, it becomes a “cinema“.

Cinema teaches us that no matter what country, religion, or language we belong to, we can see the same dream at the same time.

When people in the theater laugh or remain silent during a scene, they are not just watching a film but are sharing their feelings with everyone present.

Think, a writer wrote the story, and a director and the rest of the team brought it to life, and you (the audience) live it.

Emotions on Screen: Why we Cry, Laugh & Fear together

Sometimes a tear appears in a character’s eye, that breaks our spirit, makes us feel something at a deep level and this is the real power of cinema – it connects us to our own emotions.

Cinema shows emotions not through words but through drama, expression, silence and sound.

Maybe that’s why it is said –

“Cinema doesn’t just show, it makes you feel”

The power of Storytelling

The greatest strength of cinema is not its technology and actors but the wonderful story behind it.

A film truly wins when it makes you feel something, but after that it is no longer just a story, it becomes a mirror.
Sometimes you can see yourself and sometimes you can see your dreams and thoughts.

There is a structure before every film –

I) start

II) Struggle

III) Solution

But a true storyteller doesn’t just see the struggle, he sees our inner questions, emotions and inner thoughts.

Cinema Beyond Entertainment

There are some films which are shown only on the screen and some which reach into your heart. It forces you to think, who are we? What is the meaning of our life?

People often go to watch films to pass time, but not all films are meant to pass time.
There are some films which move with you, live with you and change you,
You do not forget after seeing them, but they also change your thoughts, feelings and your outlook on life.

Evolution of Cinema: From Shadows to Streaming

The beginning of cinema was like magic when people started watching moving pictures for the first time.

That time was the 1890s – when cinema was only black and white and there was not a single dialogue in the entire film.

~ Silent Era:

Stories were told through expression, body language and dramatic music.

This was the period when artists like “Charlie Champlin” touched the hearts without speaking.

Cinema As a Cultural Mirror

Every country, every society, and every era has its own identity, and that identity is clearly visible in his films.

Cinema not only gives us entertainment but also tells us that—

What did they think?

Why they fear that?

Whose dreams will they follow?

Which issues were suppressed in the society, and which ones emerged?

Example:

In the Hindi films of the 1950s, there was emphasis on poverty, labor, and morality. Like – “Do “Bigha Zamin”

In the 1970s-80s, an angry young man came- that is, a young man angry with the society, like “Deewar or Zanjeer”

After the 2000s, periods like LGBTQ identity and mental health started being shown in films.

Not only in India –

After 9/11, there were more war-based films in Hollywood.

Korean cinema explored economic poverty and human emotions, like “Parasite”

Iranian films portrayed society, women’s rights, and family despite censorship.

Why We Will Always Need Cinema

No matter how much the world changes – technology, formats, screen size, platforms
But the need for stories will never end.

Because man does not eat food just to stay alive, he also searches for stories to feel.

We watch cinema because-

We want to live the lives of others also.

We find peace by seeing our pain on the screen.

No matter what happens, we can never deny one thing that “We are human beings and we have feelings in our hearts and as long as these feelings remain alive, cinema will also remain alive.”
