South Africa won a big cricket match against Australia and got the World Test Championship trophy. It’s their first ICC win in 27 years.

South Africa clinched the ICC World Test Championship title by defeating Australia on Saturday. Chasing a target of 282 runs set by Australia, South Africa sealed a thrilling 5-wicket victory, powered by Aiden Markram’s brilliant century and a 147-run partnership with captain Temba Bavuma. This marks South Africa’s first ICC trophy in 27 years, since their 1998 Champions Trophy win!

Starting the fourth day at 213 for 2, South Africa needed just 69 more runs to win. They chased down the target in 83.4 overs, losing five wickets. Early in the day, captain Temba Bavuma fell for 66 off 134 balls, caught off Pat Cummins’ bowling, ending a crucial 147-run stand for the third wicket with Markram. Tristan Stubbs scored 8 off 43 balls before getting out, while star batter Aiden Markram smashed 136 off 207 balls. Australia, who had previously won the title by beating India, couldn’t defend their crown this time.

Australia’s First Innings: Australia, batting first after losing the toss, scored 212 runs. Beau Webster top-scored with 72 runs, including 11 fours, while Steve Smith made 66 with 10 boundaries. South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada took five wickets, and Marco Jansen claimed three.

South Africa’s Struggles South Africa’s first innings was disappointing, folding for 138 runs. David Bedingham scored 45, and captain Temba Bavuma made 36. Australia’s Pat Cummins grabbed six wickets, with Mitchell Starc taking two.

Thrilling Second Innings Australia’s second innings saw them reach 207, thanks to Mitchell Starc’s unbeaten 58 and Alex Carey’s 43. Rabada took four wickets. Chasing 282, South Africa started poorly but a 147-run partnership between Aiden Markram and Bavuma (66) turned the game. Markram’s brilliant 136, including a century, led South Africa to a historic five-wicket victory.

People questioned our place in the final, but this win has silenced them.” He added, “The last two days have been very special for us. It felt like we were playing in South Africa. We prepared hard and came here with a lot of confidence. Many doubted us, but I’m happy we proved them wrong with our performance.”Bavuma also dismissed claims that the Proteas team only faced weak opponents to reach the WTC final. He said, “We deserve to be here. People saying we didn’t face strong teams is nonsense. We beat Australia this time, and we had to play our very best.”

The new cycle of WTC 2027 begins on June 17

The World Test Championship lasts two years, with each team playing six series—three at home and three away.

India’s schedule is tough this time. At home, they’ll face South Africa, Australia, and West Indies. India will want to beat Australia after losing 3-1 in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which stopped them from reaching the WTC 2025 final.

India’s WTC 2027 journey includes 18 matches, detailed as:

•Australia: 5 matches

•England: 5 matches

•Sri Lanka: 2 matches

•New Zealand: 2 matches

•West Indies: 2 matches

•South Africa: 2 matches

In WTC 2027, only Australia and England will play more Test matches than India.

WTC 2027 schedule includes 18 Test matches, but Australia (22) and England (21) will play more. Other teams’ match counts are: West Indies (14), Sri Lanka (12), South Africa (14), Pakistan (13), New Zealand (16), and Bangladesh (12). Australia and England top the list, making their campaigns the busiest.
