Whose Justice Muralidhar

Is an expert in criminal law. He has studied law from three universities and has also been a judge in three High Courts. Justice S Muralidhar, who banned the use of words like ‘My Lord’, has been in the news for his sharp comments and judgements on controversial issues, but currently he is in the news for pleading for the accused of 2006 Mumbai local train attacks who were acquitted by the Bombay High Court.

Whether it has been a moot court in his life or a lawyer, judge and then a lawyer in his professional life, Justice Dr. S Muralidhar has been in the news in all roles.  Currently, Justice Muralidhar is in the news for his effective advocacy in the Bombay High Court for the acquitted accused in the serial bomb blasts in Mumbai local trains on July 11, 2006. Justice Muralidhar is one of the few judges in the country who have started active advocacy again after retiring from the post of Chief Justice of the High Court. Justice Muralidhar, who has been associated with the legal profession for more than four decades, has advocated in many important cases from Chennai to the Supreme Court, and has also served as a judge for about seventeen years. While Justice Muralidhar is praised for banning colonial-era addresses like My Lord in his court and advocating free of cost in many cases, he is also criticized for his sharp comments and decisions in some controversial cases.

Bigining

Justice S Muralidhar is going to turn 68 on August 8 next month.  He did his B.Sc. (Chemistry) in 1981 from Vivekanand College affiliated to Madras University with first division. He also did his graduation in law from the same college. He completed his LLM from Nagpur University in 1990 and PhD from TU in 2003 on the subject of ‘Tiger Aid and Criminal Justice System – in India’. He has also received many awards and medals during his college studies. He also participated in the 25th Competition held in Washington DC in 1984.

And after the appointment of Justice Muralidhar as Justice Hive and Justice S.C., he was appointed as Justice Hive and Justice S.C.

Important case

  • Justice Muralidhar handled the cases of Bhopal Gas Tragedy and Narmada Dam victims without fees.
  • He was a part of the Delhi High Court bench hearing the Naz Foundation case in 2009, which for the first time decriminalised homosexuality.
  • In 2018, he convicted Sajjan Kumar, accused in the 1984 Sikh riots, and granted bail to Gautam Navlakha and several other activists in the case of Maoist links.
  • In 2018, a bench of Justice Muralidhar and Justice Dinesh Goyal found 16 former UP PAC policemen guilty of murder, kidnapping, criminal conspiracy and destruction of evidence in the 1987 Hashimpura massacre case and sentenced them to life imprisonment.

Made a blue Maruti van his chamber

Justice Muralidhar is married to journalist, human rights activist and technology law and privacy rights expert Usha Ramanathan. Incidentally, both his wife and I have studied in Madras, Nagpur and Delhi universities. During his advocacy, he had made a blue Maruti van his chamber, which is parked in the parking lot of the Supreme Court.

Justice Muralidhar has written a book on sanctity and legal aid access to criminal justice vs.  Known as a fitness freak, Justice Muralidhar’s daily routine includes morning walks, jogging in and around Lodhi Gardens and cycling every Sunday.

J S. Murlidhar Became a lawyer again

Justice S Muralidhar started practicing law in Madras (now Chennai) in 1984 after obtaining a bachelor’s degree, but he came to Delhi in 1987 and practiced in the High Court here under the guidance of learned Solicitor General G Ramaswami, who later became the Attorney General of India. Later he was appointed as a judge in the Delhi High Court on 29 May 2006 and remained posted till February 2020. After this, he was transferred to the Punjab and Haryana High Court, where he remained for less than a year. Justice Muralidhar took oath as the 32nd Chief Justice of Orissa High Court on January 4, 2021 and retired on August 2023.  After this, he decided to practice law again, for which the Supreme Court granted him permission.

Justice S. Murlidhar held court at midnight

In February 2020, violence broke out in East Delhi in protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), in which many people were injured. In this case, Justice S Muralidhar held a court at his residence at around 12:30 in the night and reprimanded the Delhi Police. He made a relief remark and said that we cannot allow another 1984 incident to happen in Delhi. His comments on the Delhi Police and a particular person were also criticized a lot. A few days after this, an order was issued to transfer Justice Muralidhar from Delhi to the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

When Justice S Muralidhar retired from the post of Chief Justice of Orissa High Court in 2023, former Subordinate Court judge Justice Madan B Lankur, eminent jurist senior advocate Fathi S Nariman and senior advocate Sriram Panchu jointly wrote an article and successfully raised the issue of not considering him for promotion as a judge of the Subordinate Court. If he became a judge of the Supreme Court, he would have been promoted to the Supreme Court.
