In the much awaited meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping in Tianjin, China on Sunday, commitment was expressed for a fair, equitable and mutually acceptable solution to the border dispute between the two countries. In this, starting direct flight service between the two countries, trade relations, global issues and other issues related to bilateral interests were discussed in detail. Sources described the meeting as very positive. The foreign ministries of both the countries described the meeting as giving new direction and momentum to India-China relations.
Both the leaders agreed that the role of India-China is important to bring stability in the current global environment. This was the second meeting between the leaders of the world’s two most populous and fastest growing economies within a year. The meeting was initially scheduled for 40 minutes, but it lasted for a full hour.

Prime Minister Modi reached Tianjin (China) late on Sunday evening after his visit to Japan, where the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit is being organized. In a bilateral meeting with Xi Jinping, Prime Minister Modi said, ‘I am grateful to you for the warm welcome in China. Our meeting in Kazan last year has had a positive impact on our relations. An atmosphere of peace and stability has been created after disengagement on the border. An agreement has been reached between our special representatives (NSA Ajit Doval and Foreign Minister Wang Yi) regarding border management. Kailash Mansarovar Yatra has started again. Direct flights between the two countries are also being resumed. We are committed to taking our relations forward on the basis of mutual trust, respect and sensitivity.’ President Xi Jinping once again gave the analogy of an elephant and a dragon dancing together to underline the need to improve India-China relations. This was also mentioned in the letter he wrote to President Draupadi Murmu recently.

According to a statement issued by China, President Xi Jinping said that it is necessary to cherish and implement the Panchsheel principles propounded by the leaders of both countries 70 years ago. He reiterated his commitment to maintain peace and stability so that the border dispute does not define the relationship. Both countries should be seen as partners rather than rivals.

After the bilateral meeting of the President, PM Narendra Modi also met the member countries of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and the specially invited ASEAN and Central Asia leaders. A special event was organized by Jinping for this. PM Narendra Modi met with the heads of state of all the countries except Pakistan’s PM Shahbaz Sharif on Sunday.

Prime Minister Modi shook hands with Xi Jinping and Peng Liyuan and all three also got a picture clicked together. After this, Prime Minister Modi also got a picture clicked with other world leaders.
But both the leaders are standing far away from each other. PM Modi’s last meeting with any PM of Pakistan was in Ufa, Russia in 2015.
Foreign Ministry sources have already ruled out the possibility of any meeting of Modi with the PM of Pakistan in the current situation.
